This beginner-friendly half-day course is designed to introduce you to the fascinating realm of AI tools and technologies. You'll get hands-on experience with popular free AI applications like ChatGPT and Copilot's Image Creator, and explore the wider landscape of Large Language Models including giants like Google's Gemini (formerly known as Bard) and Microsoft's Copilot. Delve into the future possibilities of AI tools, understand their limitations, and discuss the ethical implications of AI in our world today.
No previous experience with any AI tools is required for this course. It will involve active participation and use of tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Claudeso does require you to sign up for free accounts with OpenAI and Microsoft at least, if not also Google and Anthropic.

Course timetable
1. Using ChatGPT
- Direct, hands-on activity engaging with ChatGPT.
- Discussion of ChatGPT’s capabilities and real-world applications.
2. Understanding what "AI" is and how it works
- Learning lingo (like what a "Large Language Model" is) so that you can understand more of what is being talked about out there.
- Understanding the basic mechanics of how the Large Language Models process information to generate content.
- Overview and experimentation of various models: Google's Gemini (Bard), Microsoft's Copilot, Claude etc.
3. Using Microsoft's Image Creator
- Practical experience in creating images using Copilot.
- Discussion around other image creating AI tools, and how to prompt it and further reading to explore.
4. Limitations and Ethics of AI Tools
- Discussing the limitations and challenges of current AI technologies.
- A hands on exercise exploring ethical considerations, particularly around privacy, bias, source material, and societal impact.
5. Understanding the Broader Landscape of AI Tools
- Observing the current areas where AI tools are being developed.
- Discussing the future of AI tools and what might be possible very soon.
- Getting you to think about where you, personally, might be able to find use for AI tools.

The course will run remotely for half a day, consisting of two 90-minute live online sessions with independent work in between.
All learners will need to install Zoom on their machines. Full technical requirements are on the Zoom website. Your link will be included in your joining instructions once you have booked your place — if you haven't received this email then please contact our team.
Learners should log into the training session 10 minutes before the start time to ensure that they have downloaded and set up Zoom correctly. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals.
