SQL Queries Level 2 Live Online Learning Courses

This one-day SQL (Structured Query Language) workshop is for data analysts who need to summarise and interrogate data. This is a follow up to the introduction course and will continue to develop your skills in writing SQL in order to manipulate data stored in a relational database system.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who needs to learn SQL, whatever database system you use. The training is typically delivered using MS SQL Server and SSMS, so please let us know what system you use.

This course is only available for private bookings, either for groups or as a one-to-one, held online via Zoom or in the classroom. Please get in touch for availability.

Course Overview

This online workshop runs from 9.30am to approximately 4.30pm with regular breaks. It is possible to split the workshop into 2x ½ days. Please let us know your preference. A maximum of six attendees means there is plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions.

What you will learn

By the end of this course you will be able to write SQL SELECT statements confidently. You will be able to retrieve data from one or more tables using a variety of criteria, and know how to write advanced SELECT queries that use union and case statements, and sub queries.

Session 1 – Introduction and Recap

We start by examining the training database and briefly recap SQL the basic SELECT statement and JOINs with a quiz and exercise.

Session 2 – Advanced SQL SELECT Statements

This section includes several useful exercises for querying data from multiple tables. Topics include:

  • CASE statements
  • Union vs Union All
  • Useful string, date and convert functions

Session 3 – Sub Queries and Window Functions

Sub queries allow you to control the data returned from your main query with the results from another query.  A typical example might be to first calculate the total that a customer has spent with you during the year, then use this query to return the customers that have spent above average.  You can also use sub queries to find duplicate data.

Window functions can be used to combine individual data with aggregate data. For example, in the same query you could display an individual's salary, the average salary for the department/company and calculate the difference.  Window functions belong to a type of function known as a ‘set function’, which means a function that applies to a set of rows. The word ‘window’ is used to refer to the set of rows that the function works on.

During the session of the workshop we complete various exercises:

  • Examples of useful sub queries
  • Introduction to Window functions
    • Over() and Over(Partition by)
    • Row() v Rank()

If you have any questions about the workshop content or setup please let us know and we’ll arrange for the trainer to give you a call.
