Courage is contagious. A critical mass of brave leaders is the foundation of an intentionally courageous culture. Every time we are brave with our lives, we make the people around us a little braver and our organisations bolder and stronger.Brené Brown
According to a Harvard study into leadership, at every level, more women were rated by their peers, their bosses, their direct reports, and their other associates as better overall leaders than their male counterparts. And yet, a 2020 analysis by Mercer of over 1,100 organisations across the world found that women are still vastly underrepresented in more senior positions (see below).
% of Women | |
Executives | 23% |
Senior Managers | 29% |
Managers | 37% |
Professionals | 42% |
Support Staff | 47% |
The same Harvard study shows that leadership skills are strongly correlated to organisational success factors such as retaining talent, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, and profitability.
So, what is your organisation doing to develop and support the aspirations of your female leaders?
Our vision is to enable and empower a network of brave female leaders to be the best they can be, to shine, to inspire, to empower, to challenge and to innovate.
…if people aren’t aware of their genius, they are not in a position to deliberately utilise it.Liz Wiseman, Author: Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter

Since joining the Brave programme, I have taken a lot more time for self-reflection and I feel that I am able to consider my approach to various situations more effectively. I have learnt a lot about how I work with different types of people, and I have also learnt to view my own strengths as important and valuable! I enjoyed having a safe space to discuss challenges, and it was encouraging to have a group of people to speak to who regularly face the same things as me! The trainers are very inspiring and knowledgeable, and it is so valuable to spend regular time on your own personal development. By joining Brave, you will meet an inspiring group of women who want to learn, develop and support each other, and it is a safe environment to be vulnerable and focus on your development needs.Hayley Rainey, London's Air Ambulance

Before joining the Brave programme, I had the usual hesitations about going into something unknown. But within minutes of the first session, I felt instantly reassured by the warm and welcoming environment. I’ve grown in confidence, because I better understand my own leadership style and am completely comfortable with it. Brave has helped me to focus on my strengths, instead of comparing myself to others and focusing on what I’m not good at. I loved the openness and support within the group. Together we were not afraid to show vulnerability and we learned so much from one another. I really looked forward to connecting with my group during the monthly sessions and feeling that sense of solidarity. The commitment is completely manageable alongside a full-time job and personal commitments. Women often put themselves low down the priority list, which is a false economy. The Brave programme is a great way to invest in your own personal development – I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to be more effective in their role and responsibilities, regardless of whether or not they are a manager.”Lindsay Baker

Our Facilitation Style and Ethos
Making it effective — research shows us that the effectiveness of any learning programme can be boosted by what happens before and after each learning session. The facilitated online and in person sessions are only one part of making the learning effective. The development journey starts on joining the programme and the personal network that is created lasts a lifetime.
Everything we facilitate is designed to ensure complete individual involvement and participation. This stimulates thinking and challenges assumptions. Our aim is to create a multi-sensory engaging experience, which will usually include: small and large group discussion, individual and group reflection, case studies and examples, quizzes, questionnaires, videos, practical stories as well as opportunities to real play (rather than role play!) and practice the techniques learnt.
This course has been empowering, exciting and liberating. It has offered a fantastic space for me to grow as a leader and I see benefits in my team almost daily. Blending self and group reflection with introductions to approaches and tools has enabled me to reach further than I imagined into leadership - my own and as a topic. The confidence I've taken from the programme, the facilitators and the group has been amazing. I would thoroughly recommend Brave leadership - it's truly been transformative. Thank you Nicky, Cathy and Happy!Fiona P

Testimonials
This is a new year long programme specifically aimed at women in leadership. Here are a sample of quotes from attendees on our range of shorter leadership programmes.
I have honestly found this programme so useful and never before have I been able to actually implement elements of it and change my own behaviour to the extent I have with this.Maria Kyle, Dogs Trust
The programme was brilliant, it met my expectations and exceeded my hopes for learning and personal development as a people leader. I feel inspired and enlightened — thank you. If the old 'management techniques' were out of date before COVID-19, they are now obsolete. I feel very lucky to be equipped with my learning from Happy in a new world where remote working means trust, self-engagement and ownership, an embedded understanding and buy-in to the organisations vision and goals and an understanding of our individual and collective strengths is more vital for us than ever... and I feel better equipped to help support my team in developing and maintaining these things.Allison McNeill, Head of Quality, External Regulatory Compliance The London Institute of Banking & Finance
I've learnt so much both technically/skills-wise and terminology-wise but also about myself, and the sessions through the programme have helped to shape the kind of leader I want to be. We were fortunate to start the course just before lockdown but the subsequent three sessions all took place on Zoom. Although not ideal to be sitting in front of a screen, the use of tech and breakout rooms and interactive whiteboards and jamboards etc meant we didn't miss out and the sessions were as packed with content and learning and energy as I'd imagine it would be in person. The sessions were paced so well and allowed for breaks away from the screen etc. I cannot recommend this leadership programme enough. I'd love to send lots of our future leaders and managers on this, they'd really benefit from this learning.Shartyn Williams, Group Operations Director, Cedar Communications Ltd

For Face-to-Face Live Online Learning
All learners will need to install Zoom on their machines. Full technical requirements are on the Zoom website. Your link will be included in your joining instructions once you have booked your place — if you haven't received this email then please contact our team.
Please reserve the session in your diary for the learning. This will allow you to join the interactive workshops and have time to reflect and do the assignments in between. We believe immersing yourself in the content for a whole day will create deep learning and lasting impact.
Learners should log into the session 10 minutes before the start time to ensure that they have downloaded and set up Zoom correctly. The course will start precisely on time and it may not be possible to go back over material missed by late arrivals.
Your active participation is expected: everyone will be heard and seen throughout, just as they would be if we were in a room together. To be heard, hear and seen you will need a microphone, speakers and camera — if you have a modern laptop that’s all you will need. Remember, you’ll need a quiet place to call from and a decent internet connection is a must.

Did you know...
...a simple challenge to normal practice is to spend one meeting only asking questions?
The ability to ask good questions is a central tenet of strong leadership. Putting away your usual directives and reaching out to staff is a great way to summon useful feedback and foster workplace unity.
